12288 X 6480
You read that correct, 12288x6480 aka 12K that's the resolution the new Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 12K (like DUH!) shoots video at.
- Do I really need 12K ?
- What about those huge file size. Which media do I record it onto?
- Will my workstation be able to handle those? Which software handles 12K seamlessly?
- 12K is fine but can it do high resolution SloMo as well?
- What is an all new 12k camera gonna cost?
Well at least these where the questions I had when I saw the specifications. The good thing is blackmagic themselves have all these questions/doubts how ever you may want to look at it, have answered/clarified.
Do I really need 12k?
Yes... 12K is sure very useful when you are doing VFX and need extra details for tracking rotoscoping etc. Not just that, say when you are editing 4K video you can now essentially re-frame and zoom in so much more without any quality loss that it allows you just shoot one master shot and then simply zoom in to close ups (if this sounds outrageous, yes it is but it is a possibility with 12K). If you still are not bought in for the 12k's use and its necessity then worry not you simply can buy this as an 8K or 6K or 4K camera. This camera is capable of recording 8K, 6K & 4K video from full sensor readout without any cropping just like it records 12K video. What's even better is now you will get cleaner quality 8K, 6K or 4K because its going to oversample it from the 12K sensor with much lower file size.
What about those huge file size. Which media do I record it onto?
12K 60 fps is not a joke & is there any recording media that can supports it. Apparently there is and its your old Cfast cards itself (you can record 12k simultaneously as alternate frames using dual cards). If that's not your style then you can simply connect a flash drive to the USB C output and record 12K. If you want it to be even more robust then you can simply get the additional SSD recorder and record 12K video onto modern SSD using those recorders. Not just that now along with the various compression ratios as in the previous models you have an additional 18:1 compression just in case you need a really light 12K.
Will my workstation be able to handle those? Which software handles 12K seamlessly?
Apparently the URSA Mini Pro 12K sensor and Blackmagic RAW were designed together to make 12 bit RAW workflows in 12K effortless. Efficiency of BRAW within Resolve is undisputed and Blackmagic claims that the latest version of Resolve (Which handles 12K) & BRAW are now so much in harmony that you can edit 12K BRAW footage within Resolve using a laptop itself like a breeze.
12K is fine but can it do high resolution SloMo as well?
You can shoot 12K at 60 fps or use in-sensor scaling to allow 8K or 4K RAW at up to 110 fps without cropping or changing your field of view. Additionally you can even window the sensor to Super 16 to capture 4K at an incredible 220 fps at 4096 x 2160 DCI.
What is an all new 12K camera gonna cost?
By Blackmagic standards this the most expensive camera they have produced yet. But in-spite of that this is the most economical 12K (not that there are any other 12K camera available) or even a 8K digital production camera in the market. As the closest competition professional 8K camera is expensive by at least $20,000. Blackmagic have priced this camera at ₹ 8,76,500 or $9,995
